New facilities at Allington Lock

The site now offers waste disposal, shower and toilet facilities, a new five-metre-wide slipway, safer moorings and canoe access.

This latest phase of the programme that began in the late 1990s has included vital work to the riverbank that was collapsing and new moorings to replace ones which were unsafe to use. The bank has been stabilised with steel sheet piling and a new timber landing stage and moorings built.

Increased capacity at the Lock Cottage now means that our Navigation team can be based there, enabling them to be located on the river to provide improved customer service.

John Morgan, our Regional Waterways Manager, added: "The work completed at Allington will be of great benefit to people using the Medway.

"It's a superbly located site but was previously under used. Before we started, the riverbank was collapsing and there were no facilities for boaters or access points for canoeists and users with trailers," he added.

We hope the improved facilities will encourage more people to experience what the river has to offer.

"There are renovation projects, completed and ongoing, all along this stretch of the navigation to improve the facilities for river users," said John. "Hopefully now, when people register their boats to enter the Medway, they will be able to see what their money is contributing to."
